Types of Metal Spiral Staircases

Spiral staircases represent a popular choice for a range of applications, due to their striking aesthetics, versatility and space-saving qualities.

In this article, Bradfabs’ resident expert looks at some of the main applications for this classic design, and the key considerations when installing a spiral staircase.

Domestic Spiral Staircases
Metal spiral staircases are perfect for extensions, new-build projects and home makeovers, and are very popular with housing developers, due to their ease of installation, high-end finish and space-saving design.

Spiral staircases for main flights need to fully comply with U.K. Building Regulations, British Standard 5395: Part 2. Balustrades and tread-risers on domestic staircases must comply with the important 'no gap greater than 100mm' rule.

Commercial Spiral Staircases
Spiral staircases can be found in a range of commercial settings, including showrooms, offices, schools, and restaurants.

Steel spiral staircases are durable and resistant to wear and tear from heavy footfall, which makes them ideal for public areas, and for both internal and external access.

Commercial spiral staircase designs can be relatively simplistic, whilst being fit for purpose - to provide access to a factory walkway, for example - or a bespoke, elaborate design

Spiral Fire Escapes
Spiral fire escapes are extremely durable, and can be adapted to most heights and designs of a building.

Suitable for a range of applications, including factories, apartments, schools, showrooms, hotels, offices, Bradfabs’ spiral fire escapes are suitable for external use, and are designed to be resistant to the effects of extreme weather conditions.

Spiral fire escapes are typically manufactured from steel in a modular design to allow fast and economic construction, with the addition of access landings available, but without the use of heavy lifting equipment.

Bespoke Staircases
Whether a spiral staircase is for commercial, domestic or public use, bespoke designs can create powerful visual impact, combined with everyday functionality. A spiral staircase can be customised to stunning effect, with choices of handrail - including a mirror-polished finish - balustrade or tread options - oak treads, for example - to enhance your project and provide a unique focal point in the space it occupies.

A wide range of materials can be considered - for example, stainless steel can be complemented by the use of glass or wood components, and provide an ideal solution in both internal and external applications.

Customised options can be included to suit workplace or other requirements, and to complement any interior design schemes. A spiral staircase can be a work of art in its own right, and make an interesting choice for unique commissions.
