Thinking of a Balcony or Raised Deck?
Balconies and raised decks can add a useful and interesting feature to the back of your house, without using up valuable outside space. In this article, the expert team at Bradfabs take you through the various options available, if you’re thinking of having a balcony or raised deck installed.
Choice of Frame
There are a number of options available, including the choice of shape and type of supports. A rectangular balcony has a lot of flexibility and, typically, gives more space above and below. A more unique design can be achieved using rounded or octagonal shapes, although this gives a more compact space, or a combination of straight edges and curves could be used for a large structure.
Supports
Getting the type of support right is crucial both for safety and to achieve a cohesive design. Vertical and lateral supports will be needed, and these will need to be securely anchored using galvanised hardware.
Materials
A balcony is usually fabricated entirely from metal, typically steel or aluminium. Metal structures have the benefit of being strong, durable and low-maintenance. A raised deck is traditionally made from wood, which will need to be stained and sealed to prolong its life and regularly maintained. Composite decking materials, made from a mixture of plastic and wood particles, have also become popular in recent years. These are generally more expensive than wood but are highly weather-resistant and require less maintenance.
Stairs
A key benefit of installing a raised deck is that the space below is opened up. It is important to get your access right to connect the upper and lower spaces and achieve an efficient, cohesive design. Traditional straight stairs are a classic design but take up a lot of space. They can be made of wood, metal, concrete or a mixture of materials. If you choose an outdoor spiral staircase instead, the footprint is much smaller and so you do not lose as much outdoor space. They can also be made of wood or metal and have the added advantage of being a beautifully stylish feature in their own right. As safety is always a priority, it is a good idea to add non-skid surfaces to the treads on an outdoor spiral staircase and traditional staircase.
Furnishings
Once you have completed your structural design, there is lots of fun to be had selecting the furnishings and features that will finish off your project. These could include: an interesting fabrication finish, such as powder coating or brushed stainless steel; a retractable awning or canopy; interesting and stylish choices of lighting, such as rope lights or lanterns; and, very importantly, your choice of tables, chairs or sofas for seating areas. A balcony or raised deck is an extension of both your home and outside space, and gives lots of scope for experimenting with different styles and ideas.
