Seven Creative Ways of Framing Your Outdoor Space
If you want to get rid of your old and broken fence or your hedging is getting out of control, we’ve got some creative ways you can frame a garden.
When you’re designing your outdoor space, you tend to focus on the plants and landscaping first and don’t realise how much of an effect the right type of framing can have. These seven creative ways will really give your garden an edge this summer.
Switch the Fencing Around
Even just switching the style of your fencing can make an impact in your garden. Instead of opting for traditional vertical slats, go for a horizontal design instead to give the space more of a contemporary feel. This is great for more compact gardens, as it gives the impression of a wider area.
Mix Up the Styles
You don’t have to stick with one type of material for your border, and going for a combination of styles will give it more of an unusual appearance. For example, you can combine stainless steel handrails on your balcony with glass balustrades to give you a cosy yet open appearance.
Build Up Your Beds
If you’re looking for a more structured appearance to your garden, you can build up some chunky bedding borders to inject some texture and colour into the space. By choosing taller varieties of plants and shrubs, you will create a private space that doesn’t feel too enclosed.
An Industrial Finish
You might think that stainless steel and other types of metals will give your garden a cold and harsh appearance, but they can be a fantastic way of finishing off a modern design. For example, you could utilise corrugated metal sheets to provide an unusual frame around the garden or add stainless steel handrails along a balcony or exterior staircase.
Add a Splash of Colour
We can be fairly conservative with colour when it comes to aspects of the garden other than the plants and flowers, but maybe now is the time to experiment a little bit. Rather than replacing all your fence panels, you could simply paint each one in a different colour or form some sort of a pattern out of them to brighten up the space whatever the weather is like.
The Fake Look
Green hedges can look really attractive in a garden, but they also take up a great deal of time and effort to maintain them. Instead of going to all this trouble, you can actually plant a fake hedge that gives you the same look but without any of the hassle of pruning it. These styles can look surprisingly true to life, and it will create a lovely enclosed space.
Black or White
Typically, walls and fences in gardens tend to be brown, grey or terracotta, but that doesn’t mean you can’t change to black or white. Black will give it a dramatic feeling, whereas painting the walls white will give you a lovely clean and pristine appearance that sets off the rest of the garden.
