Conventional Staircase
This is the most common way of gaining access to a loft space and can be either a straight flight of stairs or include a quarter or half turn. This will depend on the property and where the walls are located. A popular approach, if space allows, is to continue in the space immediately above an existing staircase to give design continuity. Materials that work well here include timber and metals such as steel. Glass can also be effective and allows the passage of natural light into the new space.

Spiral Staircase
Spiral staircases are also a popular choice for accessing a loft conversion. The big benefit here is the circular footprint, which saves a lot of space when compared to a conventional design. They are also a very versatile choice in terms of aesthetics and can range from the simply plain and minimalist to the spectacularly elaborate. To comply with building regulations, you will need to ensure that you have the right tread width and overall diameter. Steel and timber spiral staircases are widely available in kit form, or bespoke staircases can be a good choice for something more unique if your budget permits.
